NV Version: 7.45 Update 4 ONLY
OS Version:
Application version:
Plugin version: NDMP
Description:
This article is about how to identify a problem and apply a workaround where LTO2 and LTO3 tape drives are attached to a NetApp filer and are used as a NDMP device by NetVault. The problem occurs when NetVault tries to write a filemark command. There seems to be a problem when Ontap tries to relay the command to the tape device as we get a status of "command failed" back. This should not happen as the command is a valid SCSI command. The error “re-initializing driver” can occur for multiple reasons, so please check that the binary log entries are exactly as shown below before implementing the workaround.
Symptoms:
The binary log dump will show an error "Command failed, reinitializing driver". Also, when running a non-filer backup to an affected tape drive that is attached to a filer, you might see jobs staying "Waiting for media", listing the tapes being full as the reason. This is because the tapes couldn't be initialized correctly when first written to.
The key is to identifiy the symptoms in the binary log :
Error 2007/06/07 11:59:33 0 Media debian_lab_com Command failed, re-initializing driver
As this is a common error, it is important to check the embedded trace - it will show that the drive fails to write filemarks:
CAMNDMP 137 0 105933 TapeState: V4 Write Filemarks
...
SCSI 15 0 105933 CMD failed: errno 0
The embedded trace and the ndmp device manager trace file nvndmpdevmgrXXX.log will list that the device requires file mark flushing:
1 TAPESCSI:16669 177 0 110048 This drive requires filemark flushing
Overall, the trace will look like this:
1 CAMNDMP :16669 137 0 110048 TapeState: V4 Write Filemarks
1 CAMNDMP :16669 138 0 110048 Unsupported = 0x32
1 CAMNDMP :16669 139 0 110048 Flags = 0x8
1 CAMNDMP :16669 140 0 110048 File Numb
