Affected NV Version: NetVault: Backup 7.x
OS Version: All
Plugin version: n/a
Application version: n/a
Description:
Blank tapes will appear in NetVault as "Default" tape format.
A backup to tape device connected to a windows system will automatically set the format of a blank tape to MTF; a backup to tape device connected to a Linux/Unix system will automatically set the format of a blank tape to CPIO.
All Linux/Unix platforms always write backups in CPIO format, and all Windows platforms always write backups in MTF format. This is regardless of the actual format of the tape being written to.
This is done because both Windows and Linux/Unix are reliant on the tape format to store information about the files being backed up. For instance, on Linux/Unix the CPIO format stores stat information about a file and on Windows the MTF format stores header information about each stream of each file.
It is important to know that NetVault’s implementations of CPIO and MTF are not 100% compliant with the native OS implementations. Due to these differences we cannot support restoring backups through means other than NetVault.
