Title: Using VSS or OFM in clusters

Application version: N/A
Plugin version: N/A
Description: Using VSS or OFM in a clustered environment needs to be licenced. What works and what doesn't, and where which licence needs to be installed is covered in this FAQ.
Symptoms: When trying to create a backup of a virtual machine, the VSS or OFM option is not displayed under backup options. Or, alternatively, an existing job that does have this option specified suddenly skips the OFM synchronization/VSS shadow creation complaining about licencing.
For OFM, the product needs to be installed on the individual cluster nodes, which then must be rebooted. For VSS, no software at all needs to be installed on the cluster nodes.
Once this has happened, a clustered filesystem plugin licence needs to be installed on the NetVault server. This licence key can have an "Enable OFM" or an "Enable VSS" option set. There is no need to install individual VSS or OFM keys on the server or the client nodes - backups running on the virtual machine will retrieve the relevant licence key from the server.
There is currently a problem (NVG-2646) that prevents the VSS option from showing as a backup option when the filesystem backup is created on the virtual client. A workaround is to install a VSS licence on the local server or a client, then browsing this machine which will now show a VSS option, and then saving this backup option set and reusing it for the clustered backup. As long as the clustered filesystem plugin has the "Enable VSS" option set, those backups will then work.
