Symptoms:
Error message "Unable to get methods from machine" when domain managing server.
Reasons:
The "methods" refer to the "PitMethods" file that is normally generated when a server/client relationship is created between 2 NetVault machines. More specifically when the server browses a client's File System tree, a directory with the client's name is created locally on the NetVault server in the following path:
~netvault/gui/CachedPits/
This directory will contain 4 files one of which is the 'PitMethods' file. Along with the PitIcons file, they provide the server machine with icons and methods on how to display the client's data tree.
In the case of trying to control the NetVault server from a client, these files and their directory sometimes fail to be created on the client machine. The error is displayed because the NetVault server's directory is missing on the client under ~netvault/gui/CachedPits/.
For a client machine to display a GUI, it needs a controlling server as well as the relative icons and methods to do so.
- Try controlling the NVSERVER from another client with similar OS
- If successful, stop the NetVault service on the failing client
- Copy over the NetVault Server's directory under ~netvault/gui/CachedPits/ from the successful client to the failing client on the same path
- Restart the NetVault service on the failing client, you can now browse the NetVault Server
Alternatively, if the NetVault server is of the same OS as the failing client, simply stop the NetVault services on both machines and copy over the server's directory name under the NetVault Server's ~netvault/gui/CachedPits/ to the same location on the failing client, and restart the services.
