When trying to connect via ODBC using the Oracle 9.2 driver, the following error is returned:
[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
This is a problem for any connection attempted.
The issue with the driver.
Within Toad, selecting an Oracle driver name (without previously creating a DSN for it) from the drop down will give a protocol adapter error. This is due because Toad does not have all the pertinent information it needs to connect.
Try connecting to Oracle using the native Oracle client. In Toad Data Point, choose to connect to "Oracle", not "ODBC", and connect using the separate Oracle client.
This is separate in install and is provided by Oracle. If this is already installed, a client should be automatically detected by Toad. If it is not detected, there will be no client listed in the drop down menu in the connection window. You can also try verifying the connection through Oracle SQLPlus.
You can go to www.Oracle.com to look for a Client install if needed. Please refer to your DBA or directly to Oracle for further info about the client install if needed.
Verify that the DSN is set up correctly and that it connects to the database on its own (outside of Toad)
1. Go to Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Datasource (ODBC).
