Conversion of Distribution Group to Security Group via Outlook shows as Exchange 2003 Server for both 'Who' and 'Where'.

Some customers might notice when a Distribution Group is converted to a Security Group via Outlook, ChangeAuditor for Active Directory (and Exchange) shows both the 'Who' made the change and 'Where' the change was made as the (an) Exchange 2003 Server rather than the user who made the change in Outlook.

Exchange Server 2003 is actually converting these groups and not the end user, see 'Resolution' below.

If we take a Distribution Group and permission a mailbox from within Outlook ("right-click | Properties | Permissions | Add" of a given mailbox), Outlook will make a call to the Exchange Server to actually make the change, and at the same time, Exchange 2003 actually converts these groups that were used to permission, to Security Groups automatically...also, in ChangeAuditor, we see that the Exchange Server is the user and machine making these changes...this makes sense, since the Exchange Server is making the conversion take place in order for permissions to work...that is, the end user does not request these groups get converted, the user is simply trying to permission a mailbox with Distribution Groups, Exchange Server knows these groups need to be converted to Security Groups in order for this to work, so it does so. These changes will show as Active Directory subsystem changes, but there will be a separate event as well under the Exchange subsystem, for the actual permission of the mailbox that took place after the group(s) have been converted.
