Toad is working fine and suddenly the data grid shows cryptic characters as squares and question marks.
Toad does not though any error message.
The NLS_LANG of the Oracle Client is null or it does not have the correct value.
RESOLUTION 1:
Ensure the Oracle client is a compatible version for the Toad for Oracle release and it's best to match the Oracle client version to the version of the Oracle database server. See the Release Notes for the system requirements for the Oracle client version.
RESOLUTION 2:
Make sure that the NLS_LANG of the Oracle Client you are using matches your Windows Character Set.
Also make sure the Oracle Client version is correct (you can check that by going to Help | Toad Advisor).
Note: To determine your client computer's character set, open the "Regional and Language Options" dialog from the Control Panel, click the 'Advanced' tab and examine the value in the group box labeled "Language for non-Unicode programs."
To determine the NLS_LANG of your Oracle Client go to Help | Support Bundle, from the main menu.
