At times customers may like to rename a variable directory that does not conform to the naming standards they use, so that the names follow the same naming convention across the board. This is especially true when several instances of Shareplex are running. This renaming may require certain care and cannot be just done on the fly.
General information.
When renaming the vardir, one may want to carry out the following steps:
1. Shutdown Shareplex
2. Backup the existing vardir if possible
3. Rename the vardir to conform to whatever naming standard one has and ensure that it has the same (or appropriate) ownership/permissions as that of the earlier vardir.
4. (optional) Edit the file named defaults.yaml located in /proddirand change the entry for the vardir in it to reflect the current location of the vardir and save the file. This file is useful in case the environment setting accidently omits the variable for vardir so that the value is inherited from the defaults.yaml file.
5. Set appropriate value for the environment variable SP_SYS_VARDIR to that it points to the new vardir.
6. Start Shareplex.
Test this out first in a QA environment prior to executing the steps in the production environment. Alternately, carry out these steps during maintenance window so that as a last resort it is possible to install Shareplex afresh, run ora_setup and activate, in case of any unforeseen circumstances.
This solution is only applicable to Shareplex version 6.0 and up.
