Cause
This error usually occurs when one of the following conditions is met:
The server process calls the CoDisconnectObject function.
The server process ends (terminates).
No network communication is possible between the client and server computer for six minutes or more. -
Resolution
Spotlight data collection for Windows uses two types of connection to the host, a WMI connection (main connection) and a remote registry connection (secondary connection). The term connection means a connection between the collector and the remote host. The major collections use the WMI connection but Spotlight has a few non-essential internal collections (e.g. "Advanced Performance Options") which works behind the scenes and uses the remote registry connection (i.e. secondary connection). These internal collections are not touchable from any Spotlight options.The Diagnostic Server decides whether a monitored Windows connection is in outage (i.e. a Connection Failure alarm is raised and the home page cleared) based on the connectivity of the WMI connection and "not" the remote registry connection (i.e. secondary connection). That is to say that Windows server outage alert is “not” dependent on the secondary connection at all. -
Additional Information
The secondary connection for Windows is a remote registry connection which is used in a few collections, e.g. AdvancedPerformanceOptions, where Spotlight can't get the data via WMI. Being a secondary connection means that when it fails the connection does NOT go into outage.
