Merging users using Directory Migration Agent with users that were created with Microsoft DirSync fail to successfully merge

When attempting to merge users from a source on premise Active Directory environment with existing users in an Office 365 environment that were initially created with Microsoft DirSync, the merge will fail and the following error will be seen in the Directory Migration Agent (DMA) log:

1/29/2015 10:00:41 AM    2308    Error 0x80131501. DirSync Users are not allowed to update.

For some users migrated to Office 365 via Microsoft DirSync, Migration Manager / DMA cannot migrate attributes that are not migrated by Microsoft DirSync. This may happen if these users have addresses that Microsoft DirSync does not handle, for example: X.400 addresses in Exchange Server 2003

Either of the following actions can be taken to resolve this issue:

1. If the source users failing to merge do contain X.400 addresses within their proxyAddresses list and it is confirmed they can be removed without any negative impact, remove the X.400 address.

2. In the Migration Manager for Active Directory (Microsoft Office 365) console, on the Mapping tab for the collection, delete all rules where Target Attribute is set to EmailAddresses. Do this for all collections and/or migration pairs that are affected by the problem.

ST84199 has been resolved in MigrationManager_8.10_Update_20141225 - however the additional configuration procedure in the resolution section of this article must still be performed. Also to confirm which specific attribute is causing the error, please increase logging level to "Full" using the LogLevel registry key as per the following article: https://support.quest.com/migration-manager-for-ad/kb/117139
