Utility to test if a TCP port is open on a client, over a network or VPN, and on the remote host machine (e.g. mart server, license administrator, web portal machine).
NO DOS COMMANDS REQUIRED.
Purpose: Company firewalls and antivirus software can prevent the ERwin modeling suite products from functioning because a port that it needs open may have been blocked or disabled over the network or VPN and/or on the remote host machine. Run this easy Windows based utility from the client machine where you run ERwin DM or the Web Portal browser to check the network to the host machine and the host machine itself.
It may also be used to check whether a port is open on the local client machine where the utility is run.
Figure 1. Two-tier and Three-tier architecture.
The utility requires that you know the name or ip address of the machine you are trying to reach.
NOTE: for an easy utility that checks whether a port is open on your local machine that does not require you to know the name of your machine or machine ip address, please see Easy utility to Test if a LOCAL TCP port is open
Operating System: runs on Microsoft Windows.
Program logic:
- If the port is open, True is returned.
- If the port is not open on the host machine or network or VPN, False is returned.
- If the port is non-existent, False is returned.
- If the host machine is non-existent, powered down, or the wrong machine name is typed, False is returned.
Steps to use it
-
Download CheckRemotePortOpen.zip (289 kb) and unzip it. Then follow the steps below:
1. Double click CheckRemotePortOpen.exe.
2. Type the port number, the host machine name or ip address, and press OK.
Figure 2.
In order for the software to work (mart server, web portal, license administrator), the port needs to be open on three locations:
1. The local client machine (where ERwin DM or other client software runs). Test this point by typing the machine name where you run ERwin.
2. The Network. Test this point by typing the host machine name.
3. The host machine that runs the server application (mart server, web portal, license administrator). Test this point by typing the host machine name.
NOTE: if you do not know the
name of your machine, please watch this
video to find out how.
If you do not know the
ip address of your machine, please watch this
video to find out how.
Use Windows remote desktop to view a remote machine and follow the steps in the video.
Wait a few moments and the result is returned:
Figure 3. The port is Open
OR
Figure 4. The port is closed.
- If the port is not open on the host machine or network or VPN, False is returned.
- If the port is non-existent, False is returned.
- If the host machine is non-existent, powered down, or the wrong machine name is typed, False is returned.
USAGE:
-
All three points (client, network, and host machine) must have the port open in order for the CA ERwin DM products to work with their clients.
- If you want to check if the port is open on the network and the host machine, run the utility from the client machine where you run ERwin DM or the Web Portal browser. Give it the remote host machine name.
- If you want to check if the port is open on the client machine, run the utility from the machine where you run ERwin DM or the Web Portal browser. Give it the client machine name.

- There is also the Vendor Daemon port on the License Administrator host machine that is set randomly at startup time. We suggest that you set that to a definite port using 'Use this port'. Please read about how to do that HERE.
