Infrastructure Dashboard shows "There Is No Data To Display" for "Top Network Utilization" for the Virtual Machines

For Virtual Machines, networks metrics are not available under the Infrastructure cartridge dashboards:

1. On the Infrastructure Environment dashboard "Top Network Utilization" stats are missing for all Virtual Machines; it shows "There Is No Data To Display".
2. On the the Infrastructure > Hosts > All Hosts dashboard it shows "n/a" for the network metric.

However from the VMware Environment dashboards, all networks metrics are being displayed for the Virtual Machines.

 

Information displayed and working as designed.

VMware Environment does feed into hosts Infrastructure dashboard, but network metrics cannot be displayed on Infrastructure for the Virtual Machines because the Hosts dashboard expects the following metrics (which are not collected by VMware agent, all of this due to the fact that vSphere does not collect those metrics either but vSphere collects network metrics in a different way):

• host.network.interfaces.bandwidth
• host.network.interfaces.utilization
• host.network.utilization
   

For the VMware agent in Foglight, the metrics collection is based on the metrics that can be seeing in vSphere; only Infrastructure agents collects the above three metrics. If using the VMware agent, it is recommended to use VMware Environment dashboard to view information.

Note: Setting an Infrastructure agent in addition to the VMWare agent can create frequent topology changes which impacts Management Server performance; for more information refer to the "Virtual hosts and reported metrics" section of the Foglight for Infrastructure - User Guide.
