How to monitor a service and get an alert when a Windows service stops? (4290709)

In vFoglight, how to monitor and trigger an alarm if a Windows service stops running? When monitoring a server that runs a specific service (ie SQL for example), is it possible to be alerted if this service stops running.

The easiest way to do this is to create an Infrastructure agent and set it to monitor the service you are interested in.

1. First deploy the agent packages to run on a FglAM server.
   • Go to : "Dashboards | Administration | Agents | Agent Status"
   • Click on "Deploy Agent Package"
   • Choose the FglAm host you want the agent to run on.
   • Deploy the HostAgent.gar file.

• Create the agent to collect the process information.
  • Go to Infrastructure dashboard
  • In the upper right corner click the “Add OS Monitor”

• Enter the IP address, FglAM, and OS type.
• If it is a virtual server that we are already collecting from, click Virtual/Guest. This will prevent redundant metrics from being collected.

• On the "Agent Properties" screen view the Services to Monitor.
  • Click "Copy" and name the new services list.Configure the new list to collect service information from the services you want to collect. New services can also be added here that are not on the list. Note: to modify these services after the agent has been created, go to:
  • "Administration | Agents | Agent Status"
  • Select the agent (the type will be windows agent) and click on "Edit Properties".
  • Click "Modify the private properties for this agent".
  • Under "Monitored Services" clone the default service and then modify the new service.
• Note: To add a service that is not on the list, click "Add Row" and add the new service.
  You will need to find the service in the Windows server and add the DISPLAY Name on the properties tab of the service.

• Configure the credentials for server and the scope for them.

• Give the rule 5 minutes to collect data and develop a baseline.  
The monitored service "Service Name" will show in the Infrastructure | Host | Hostname | OS | services topology.
Note this is the Service Name rather than the Display Name that was entered in the Agent 

• Stop the service and verify the rule is working.
