Forest Console Pre Recovery Checks Error -
Description
The Forest Recovery Console gives an error when verifying settings: "Cannot access the backup file. Not enough free disk space on drive C: to perform restore from backup."

Cause
The unpacked components of the backup exceeds the available space on the C: drive of the given Domain Controller. -
Resolution
Disk space must be freed up on the given Domain Controller as there is currently no way to change where the unpacked components of the backup are stored. Free space is checked as follows:

If the backup is not stored on the DC the FR console checks if there is sufficient space to copy the compressed backup from the backup location to the %temp% volume on the DC. If the backup is stored on the DC this step is skipped

Check that there is sufficient free space, on the volume where the NTDS.dit database is stored, to hold the extracted NTDS.dit file and logs from the backup

Check that there is sufficient free space, on the volume where SYSVOL is stored, to hold the extracted SYSVOL data from the backup

Check that the %systemroot% volume has sufficient free space for the other extracted components of the backup
Note: RMAD reads the data directly from the compressed backup so there is no need to decompress it first. The entire backup does not need to be decompressed, RMAD will extract the necessary components to the appropriate volumes (volume where NTDS.dit resides, volume where SYSVOL resides, %systemroot% for all other components) -

Enhancement 87195102 has been submitted to include the ability to change the location of the unpacked backup during a restore for consideration in a future version of the product.
