Cause
The most common reason for this error is that the SQL Server connection is not linked to an OS connection.

Resolution
Please right-click on the SQL Server connection in connection manager, open Properties | Details and specify Linked OS Connection by selecting it from the dropdown list.
Link the rest of SQL Server connections to corresponding OS connections to avoid this problem. -
Additional Information
NOTE: There can be other reasons for this error, such as performance counters or WMI issues. These would require further diagnosis.
