Running a 'IIS Log Files / OWA / Windows Mobile' , Windows Mobile Default or Windows Mobile Device gathering against ActiveSync server gives the following errors:
The following error occurred while logging onto the Exchange mailbox server [Element not found.].
The following error occurred during the processing of a given gathering: Element not found.
There are two tasks involved with the Windows Mobile gathering.
1) 'IIS Log Files / OWA / Windows Mobile'
2) 'Windows Mobile Devices'
The 'IIS Log Files / OWA / Windows Mobile' task should be run against the Active sync\Front End servers (one 'IIS Log Files/Windows Mobile' task for each Active sync\Front End server)
The Windows Mobile Devices task should be run against the mailbox servers (one Windows Mobile Devices task for each mailbox server).
Running the Windows Mobile Devices task against the front end and not the mailbox servers will result in the 'Element not found' error. This is because the task would make an LDAP query against this server for known information stores and mailboxes already collected by MessageStats and since the server does not have an information store or mailboxes it results in the error element not found or in other words it cannot find the AD object being queried for in that location.
For Exchange 2003 Mailbox (Back-end) Servers this can also happen if the SystemMailboxes are moved from the Microsoft Exchange System Objects Container in Active Directory.
This is also why the Windows Mobile Devices gathering is dependent on a successful Exchange Mailbox gathering and Mailbox Account Properties gathering task (which are both included in the Default Gathering) as well the Windows Mobile Devices gathering task is also dependant on successful IIS Log Files / Windows Mobile gathering task.
1. Ensure Exchange Mailboxes gathering against the Mailbox servers has been run successfully.
2. Run IIS Log Files / OWA 'Windows Mobile' gathering against the ActiveSync / Front end server
3. Run 'Windows Mobile Devices' against the Mailbox servers
If Applicable for Exchange 2003, move one System Mailbox per backend server back to the Microsoft Exchange System Objects Container in AD.
