"Login failed for user 'foglight' " reported in FMS logs after moving SQL Server repository
Description

After moving the external SQL Server repository the following error message is reported in the debug management server log:
2014-04-18 13:30:23.356 DEBUG [main] com.quest.nitro.service.upgrade.db.DatabaseUpgradeService - Fatal error connecting to database
java.lang.RuntimeException: org.jboss.util.NestedSQLException: Could not create connection; - nested throwable: (com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Login failed for user 'foglight'.); - nested throwable: (org.jboss.resource.JBossResourceException: Could not create connection;
Cause
The "No login" error can be reported for a variety of reasons, including the following:
- The encrypted password is incorrect.
- The authentication type (Windows Authentication versus SQL Server authentication) is not set correctly.
- The foglight login is not present in the instance.
- The port is incorrect and the FMS is connecting to the wrong instance so the "foglight" login is not present.
Resolution
Execute the following troubleshooting steps:
1. Verify that an ODBC connection can be made to the database from the Foglight Management Server (FMS)host.
  - Log onto the FMS Host. If you want to test Windows Authentication login as the foglight user.
  - Select "Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Data Sources (ODBC)"
  - Select "System DSN" and click "Add..."
  - Select the SQL Server driver, click "Next" and enter the name and description and the host for the data source. Now click "Next" again.
  - Select the appropriate authentication (SQL Server authentication or Windows NT authentication).
  - Click the "Client Configuration" button, uncheck the "Dynamically determine port" box, and enter the appropriate port number in the Port number field, and click "OK".
  - If SQL Server authentication is used enter the credentials in the Login ID and Password fields.
  - Click "Next".
  - Click the "Test Data Source" button to check the connectivity.
2. Verify login from SQL Server Management Studio
3. Verify that the default database for the "foglight" login is the "foglight" database.
  Under the "General" section of the Login properties check the value of the following setting:
  Default database
4. Verify that the "foglight" database is owned by the "foglight" login.
  Under the General section of the properties for the foglight database verify that the following value is set to the foglight login:
  Owner
5. Check the encrypted password set in the server.config file.
  Use the command in KB71462 (How to reset the Foglight remote database user password if it has been forgotten?) to encrypt the password and compare the encrypted value to the following setting in the server.config file:
  server.database.password
6. Verify that the correct authentication is set.
  - If the "server.database.integratedauth" setting is present in the server.config file it determines whether SQL Server authentication or Windows authentication is used. If the setting is not present SQL Server authentication is used.
    The value should be set to "true" if windows authentication is used. If SQL Server authentication is used the value should be "false".
    server.database.integratedauth = "false";
  - Verify the authentication set for the database server.
    Check which of the following options is selected under the "Security" section of the Server Properties:
    "Windows Authentication mode"
    "SQL Server and Windows Authentication"
  - Verify the authentication set for the foglight login.
    Under the "General" section of the Login properties check which of the following options is selected:
    "Windows authentication"
    "SQL Server authentication"
7. Verify that the foglight login has permission to connect to the database, that the login is enabled, and that the login is not locked out. These settings can be checked from the "Status" section under the Login properties.
8. Confirm the port for the database from the SQL Server Configuration Manager. Select "SQL Server Network Configuration | Protocols for MSSQLSERVER | TCP/IP" and check the IP Addresses tab of the properties.
