For users with sporadic problems, or problems that cannot be reproduced once logging is enabled, use Log Level 3. Log Level 3 is available through the GUI or as a job parameter beginning with LiteSpeed Version 4.8. Log Level 3 generates a Verbose log file on each backup run but if the backup job was successful then the log file is deleted. Therefore a log text file is always generated but only kept if the backup job fails.
Turn on the LiteSpeed logging by either setting logging to 'Verbose' in the Backup GUI Wizard, by clicking on the ‘Backup Options’ button or using the parameter ',@logging=3', via script. This parameter may also be added in the LiteSpeed Maintenance Plan by clicking on the ‘Backup Options’ button when editing the Maintenance Planin Enterprise Consoleor adding “ -Logging 3” to the T-SQL command in the job step via SQL Server Enterprise Console.
The log will be written to %\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Quest\LiteSpeed folder. The log is a text file and will be named similarly to: SLS_5_8_2006-11_02_01-AM.Log
For details on how to set the Logging=3 for the whole instance, by editing the Registry (in the case of various maintenance plans failing sporadically), see Solution SOL22482
