Is there a way to email an alarm if total sessions goes above the metric threshold? For instance, the user can have the metric for %active sessions established but would also like to have one for total # of sessions.

Resolution
The database maximum user sessions connected to a database can be undesirably reached. Now this maximum could be the oracle total sessions parameter sessions (if using dedicated connections then a more appropriate parameter could be processes).
So the easy solution would be to set thresholds(thus making an alarm) based on the max sessions or processes. For example on one of our test databases we have the sessions parameters set to 160. On the Spotlight on Oracle Home page he can create an alarm on the Total Users control by setting thresholds e.g. Set Medium 140 and High to 155 (see instructions below). This alarm will fire if total number of user sessions exceed either of these values. Medium alarm is fired if total user sessions exceeds 140 but less than 155. If the total users sessions reaches or exceeds 155 then a high alarm if fired.
If user is using dedicated connections, the thresholds should be set similarly on the Total Server Processes control at the bottom of the Server Processes section of the home page.
Following our example steps on setting Thresholds:-
1. Right-click a component (i.e. the Total Users value) on the Spotlight home page.
2. Choose Metrics... from the shortcut menu.
3. Click the Thresholds tab.
At the bottom grid, check the checkbox for Medium and High and then enter the lower value for a required threshold range. In the example
1. Check Medium and enter in the Start value 140
2. Check High and enter in the Start value 155
3. Ensure no other severities are checked.

In the example, if/when the number of user sessions exceed either value an alarm will be fired and shown on the home page and in the alarm log. The user can (if needed) use the help to discover how to have an email sent if an alarm if fired. Search in help on Set alarm thresholds
