What happens if a DC comes online before the DNS server is restored? Does the Forest Edition consider this during recovery?

If the DNS servers are not hosted on the domain controllers themselves then DNS will not present a problem during restore. However, if DNS servers are hosted on DCs then it is important that they are recovered first to ensure connectivity throughout the recovery process.

Recovery Manager Forest Edition checks the dependencies between the domain controllers. If some DC hosts the DNS service, and some other DCs use that DNS service, than Recovery Manager Forest Edition does the following:

1. It starts the restore from a backup on all the DCs in parallel, because this step doesn't depend on DNS availability.
2. Recovery Manager Forest Edition calculates the DNS dependency graph.
3. The DCs hosting the DNS services continue with next recovery steps, while the dependent DCs wait for their DNS servers.
4. When a DC with a DNS service passes the "Isolation" step of the recovery procedure, all the dependent DCs resume their recovery.
5. If a DC with a DNS service failed, some other DNS server is chosen for all the dependent DCs. If there are no DNS servers left, we give up with recovery of these dependent DCs.

DNS dependencies during recovery can also be simplified by specifying an external DNS server address in the forest recovery project for each DC.
