With NetVault and the VMware plugin installed on the ESX server:
The backup will require a pre and post script on the esx server that the virtual image resides on, in the ../netvault/scripts directory. The pre script will create a snapshot of the image and mount the virtual image in the designated working directory of the esx server. Then you need to create a file system backup for the image in this directory. Once the backup has completed, the post script will run and this will unmount the image and remove the snapshot.
Examples:
+) Do a full backup of vm image with hostname "foo.bar.com" across the network,
Talk to ESX host "wisdom.bar.com" or “localhost� as user "root" with
password "foobar". - Export will go to "/mnt/tmp":
