There are lots of log messages showing:
"Machine %s has gone down"
Backups of the machine %s generally fails following the above message.
Every NetVault machine constantly broadcasts availability packets to other NetVault machines on the same network segment.
This messaging consists of UDP packets sent by the broadcaster which must be acknowledged by the other NetVault machines.
A NetVault:Backup server determines a client "has gone down" when it stops receiving acknowledgements to its availability packets.
This could happen for several reasons:
1. The network is overloaded and packet transfers are delayed, lost or blocked.
2. The client mentioned in the message is under heavy load preventing or delaying the receipt/acknowledgement of the server packets.
3. The server is under heavy load making sending or receiving packets temporarily impossible or delayed.
4. A traffic management mechanism impairs traffic (firewall)
5. Genuine network hardware failure (NIC, cables, switches, routers)
6. Machines with multiple IP addresses can appear to go offline if they do not have a Perferred IP set in the NetVault Configurator.
When the message "Machine %s has gone down" appears in the logs, try to determine what is the cause:
- check with your network team for any outage or disruption, or possible network hardware failures
- if a firewall is in place between Server and Client, make sure it doesn't prevent messaging
- if the network stability isn't an issue try to determine the source of the problem by observing resource consumption of both
server and client while this client backup is in progress.
