Description:
Possible solution for Tapes being randomly marked as Read Only.
Symptoms:
Tapes are marked as Read Only but there is no observable pattern which explains why.
In the binary log we see "Media Error" error messages on the tape drive.
These messages are marked as having context with an exclamation mark in the red warning circle. Opening this item by double clicking and scrolling down to the end of the text shows further error messages like:
SCSI :3300 25 0 134321 CMD WRITE [ 0a 01 00 00 01 00 ]
SCSI :3300 17 0 134321 CMD SENSE KEY 'ABORTED COMMAND ' [b] - ASC 47 ASCQ 03
SCSI :3300 18 0 134321 CMD SENSE INFO '<UNKNOWN>'
TAPESCSI:3300 85 0 134321 Unexpected error writing to media
MEDWRITE:3300 183 1 134321 Device write data out: FAILED
This is an error in the SCSI subsystem, which can be in any element in the SCSI subsystem, check the all elements of the SCSI subsystem including:
SCSI controller,
firmware,
cabling,
termination,
tape drive.
Explanation.
Netvault does not use the Operating System SCSI drivers, it uses "pass-through" commands to send SCSI commands directly to the SCSI device. The error messages that are passed back in these context error messages (shown as an exclamation mark in the Error message log) are passed back directly to Netvault from the SCSI subsystem, Netvault performs no interpretation on these.
The actual order and text of the error messages in the log (not the context) will vary depending on the exact error; the important information in these cases is contained in the context message.
