Description:
With the 'Ensure this backup is the first on the media' option selected, RMAN backup still uses more than one media.
Symptoms:
If the 'Ensure this backup is the first on the media' option is selected, then RMAN backup jobs will use more than one media because the backup job has more than one data stream (tablespace, archivelog, controlfile, etc). Each stream will be assigned to a new media in order to accomplish the option 'Ensure this backup is the first on the media'. -
Resolution
De-select the 'Ensure this backup is the first on the media' option so that all backup streams use single tape till it becomes full. -
