Inclusion and exclusion lists are built inside the NetVault Backup Application as
a tree in memory. The maximum size of the list depends on how much memory is available to the backup process while it is running. The backup process competes with other processes running on the system for system memory, so running the backups when the system is quiet will allow larger inclusion and exclusion lists to be processed. The maximum size of inclusion and exclusions lists is not possible to calculate, since it depends on the system load at the time of the backup, but probably ranges from tens of thousands of entries on a small system to hundreds of thousands of entries on a 64-bit system with a large memory configuration.
The system used for diagnosing this limitation was limited to 120k entries. If you run out of memory it will cause NetVault process manager to dump, and show the following message:
-*- NetVault Trace Dump -*-
Title: Dump requested by PMGR
Using buffer at 0xbfcc6b68
Unable to allocate 40 bytes of memory.
Failed to allocate 52 byte: Insufficient or invalid.
When encountering this, the workaround is to split up the jobs and use multiple inclusion lists.
