Description:

This FAQ describes the problem and cause of VaultDR backups failing with sync partition errors or just hanging without writing.


Symptoms:

A VaultDR backup appears to hang or it fails with an error similar to below:

Error 2007/04/04 00:00:29 64 Data Plugin SWPEXHQ1N1 DeviceIoControl failed to Sync partition: C:. The device is not ready.
Error 2007/04/04 00:00:29 64 Data Plugin SWPEXHQ1N1 Failed to Sync partition: C:

Even changing the "Write inactivity period" to 1 second does not allow the partition to synchronize.

The machine in question has the MOM (Microsoft Operations Manager) service enabled and running.

It would appear that MOM grabs the disk it is monitoring and continually writes to it which in turn prevents the VaultDR online plugin from synchronizing the partition.

At the present time there is no workaround other than stopping the MOM service while during the sync phase. It should be OK to start the service once the partition has synchronized.

There is a fault report / feature request open to find out if it is possible to get around this. The reference number is VWG-17.
