We have an F5 BigIP Load balancer sitting in front of our Web servers. Our web servers then connect to our Application servers, going through another BigIP Load Balancer. Where is the recommended deployment location for the Foglight Experience Monitor (FxM) appliance?
|---------- Web Sever 1 --------| |-------- App Server A-----|
F5's Big IP Load Balancer #1 - -| |---- F5's Big IP Load Balancer #2 -----|
|------------Web Server 2 -------| |------- App Server B------|
The answer depends on what you would like to see the performance of Web Servers or the performance of the Application Servers?
You'll only be able to see the performance of the Application servers if you position the FxM box between the Web servers and the App servers. (Note: this will only work if communication between the web servers and app servers is HTTP protocol). If you do this, the web servers will appear as the "clients" connection to the Application servers. This probably means you could not see the actual end users connecting to the site. The download and response time would just include delays in the Application Servers.
If you want to see the actual end-users connecting, then you need to position FxM in front of the web servers. This will let you see end users and see the web server performance. Download and response times will include delays in Web Servers and Application servers (but not broken out separately).
