There are two possible reasons.
1. Exchange 2013 health mailboxes can send and receive a significant amount of email depending on your organization size and number of exchange databases.
2. If you are running an older version of MessageStats, 7.2 and earlier and then upgraded to 7.4 after introducing Exchange 2013 into the Organization this could account for the increase. There was a bug in 7.2 that was introduced when Microsoft changed the way tracking logs are recorded in Exchange 2013 CU3 and higher. Until the upgraded of MessageStats was done you would have been collecting less information due to the bug found in 7.2.
