The At-A-Glance unified reporting script protects passwords used during the script execution from prying eyes via encoding them. Please note that this is not a real encryption (which is machine specific dependent on a key). However, the solution has been chosen because allows transferring the script from one workstation to another without having to process again (re-encrypt) all passwords or export an encryption key while still providing reasonable protection, for instance when working remotely with AppAssure Support or with a consultant.
Two types of passwords are supported.
First type is the interactive passwords which are encountered when the credentials for accessing a core are requested via a popup window or is masked when entered during setting up the script e-mail settings or just encoding passwords for subsequent use.
The second type consists in the passwords entered as parameter values in the command line or in the cores file. These passwords need to be encoded.
The At-A-Glance unified reporting script provides an interactive password encoding option.
When launched with the -encodepassword parameter, the user is asked to enter (and then re-enter) the password to be encoded. The result is dispayed on the screen and copied to the clipboard so it is easily pasted where the password is needed, for instance in the file holding the cores information.
The command line to access the password encoding function is:
PS C:\MySripts>.\CondensedEvents.unified.3.x.ps1 -encodepassword
and the results are shown in the picture below (click to see it full size)
