Topic Outline:
1. Reviewing the sample model
2. Creating a new model
3. Adding entities and attributes
4. Creating relationships between entities
When first launching Toad Data Modeler, the user will be presented with a sample model which consists of the most frequently used items like Entities, Attributes, and relationships. This video will show how to create a new model from scratch.
Start a new model by clicking on the New Model icon. Toad Data Modeler supports a large number of databases and versions. All of these databases can be physically modeled. Universal Models are available if a physical database type is not supported or the physical database has not yet been determined. A logical model with inheritance properties can be created by selecting Logical model. In this example Oracle version 11g2 will be shown.
To add entities to the model select the Entity item on the toolbar and then click on the workspace. Here a Customer entity has been added along with attributes and their associated data types. The SQL Preview tab shows how Toad Data Modeler will forward engineer the data model into Oracle DDL scripts needed to create this model in a new database. In this example, keys and indexes are also created in the model.
Another entity Orders is added and a relationship is created from the Customers table to the Orders table. One can create different types of relationships like identifying and non-identifying. Toad Data Modeler automatically designated the primary and foreign key constraints. If changes are needed, one can double click on the relationship to make them.
