Testing Strategy
In order to obtain the send/receive rate of the network (bandwidth), Foglight Infrastructure Agent is used to monitor the network of the host
monitoring Host C-NC2 will get the bandwidth from FglAM to Monitored Host (or vice versa)
monitoring Host A-NC2 will get the bandwidth from FglAM to FMS (or vice versa)
in order to eliminate the testing noise, a private network is set up that is dedicated to the SQL server monitoring
in order to imitate user access to the monitored sql server, benchmark factory tool is used to feed data to the SQL server
in order to gauge the bandwidth for each different type of monitoring, DB monitoring, OS monitoring, and SQL PI will be enabled one by one
Testing tool: Benchmark Factory
Benchmark Factory is used to feed some data into DB instance. TPC-E is used and it is the newest online transaction processing (OLTP) benchmark. TPC-E involves a mix of 10 concurrent transactions of different types and complexity executed either online or queried for deferred execution. The database is comprised of 33 tables with a wide range of record and population sizes. TPC-E is measured in transactions per second (tpsE)
Test Steps and Results
Note:
The chart "Send/Receive Rate" uses maximum metrics and Peak value in the curve. The data has a certain deviation within the acceptable range.
In order to imitate real user behaviors, a dashboard the Real-time Activity dashboard was opened in online mode, so the back-end collections used by this dashboard are actually at real time mode.
For DB monitoring only, the send rate is greater than the receive rate, because size of query sql statement tends to be several kb while the returning result is only a few records
The send/receive rate at online mode is much greater than the one at offline mode, as data collection online frequency is greater than offline frequency
After PI is enabled, the send/receive rate increases tremendously as SQL PI sampling frequency is 1 sec
After PI is enabled, ingress data will transferred from FglAM host to PI Host, however, the package size is relatively small (20kb/s) as it uses DLP channel and all the data files have been compressed
If multiple SQL server instances are being monitored, the FglAM Send/Receive Rate is: Send/Receive Rate for single instance X the number of instances
