Backups and Unpacked backups are filling the drive on the server (4249321)

Unpacked backups are used to provide quick access to the contents of the backup for restore purposes. You can safely remove the unpacked components as the backup will be unpacked again if you choose it during an Online Restore. Unpacked backups can be removed automatically based on what you have configured in the RMAD console:

1. Right click the top Recovery Manager for Active Directory node and select Settings
2. Select the Unpacked Backups tab
3. The first option, if enabled, will store the unpacked components of a backup as it is created. You can choose how many unpacked backups to keep for each domain
4. The second option specifies how long to keep unpacked backups that were created by using the Online Restore or GPO Restore Wizard
5. You can also choose where to store the unpacked backups from this screen

The Unpacked Backups settings mentioned above are global settings inherited by all Collections, however they can be overridden at the Collection level. There is an Unpacked Backups tab found in the Properties for each collection.

You can manually remove the unpacked components from the RMAD console (do not delete the actual files or folders):

1. Expand Backups and click Active Directory
2. Any item showing a folder and disk icon is an unpacked backup. Right click it and select Delete Unpacked Components. This will not delete the .bkf backup file itself, just the unpacked components.

You can delete the actual backups (.bkf files) for your DCs if you decide you do not need all of the current backups that you have. Please note, once the backup is deleted there is no way to recover it and no way to restore AD objects to the state they were, in the deleted backup. To manually delete the backup (.bkf) files:

1. Expand Backups and select Active Directory
2. Select the backups you want to delete, right click and select Delete

You can also select the retention period for the backups for each collection so RMAD will automatically remove backups older then the setting you specify:

1. Right a collection and select Properties
2. Select either the Console Storage or DC Storage tabs (or both if storing backups to both locations)
3. Under Retention Policy select how many backups to keep for each computer
