The display name of the Software Inventory Item must EXACTLY match the name that the software registers in Add/Remove programs. Otherwise, K1000 appliance may atttempt to deploy the package repeatedly even though it is already there.
In order to guarantee that the Inventory Item display name exactly matches, it is recommended to first install the desired package on a target machine and then take an automatic inventory of that machine using the K1000 appliance. The newly installed package should appear in the inventory list. You may then associate a digital file and create one or more deployment packages.
If you do not have an entry for your software item then this problem can be avoided by using custom Inventory Rules. You will find this field in the Software tab.
Custom Inventory Rules when set check for the certain parameters on the client machines before going ahead with the installation for the managed install.
For Example: If you wish to install MS Outlook 2003 via a managed installation, you can make use of one of the custom inventory rules like:
FileExists(C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE)
The above rule will check if the file “OUTLOOK.EXE” does exist on the client machine. If the rule fails i.e. if the file is not present then the K1000 would assume that the software isn’t installed on the client machine and would then go ahead and install the software, but if the rule is found to be correct then it assumes the software is already installed on the machine and the K1000 need not reinstall it again. Thus absence of any custom inventory rules would lead to managed installation getting executed repeatedly on the client/device machines.
Following is the list of some of the commonly used Custom Inventory Rules:
• DirectoryExists(string dirName)
• FileExists(string fullPath)
• FileVersionEquals(string fullPath, string valueToTest)
• FileVersionLessThan(string fullPath, string valueToTest)
• FileVersionGreaterThan(string fullPath, string valueToTest)
