Toad Data Point 6.0.5 - User Guide

Create Google Analytics Queries

To query Google Analytics data, you can use the Query Builder as you would with other data sources, or you can use the Database Explorer (Viewer). The Database Explorer allows you to build a multi-dimensional pivot grid to view the data from a selected Account View. You can then save the view as a Query or send it to the Query Builder where you can join it with other Account Views, other Queries, or other data sources.

Saved Queries appear in the Object Explorer when you are connected to the original Google Analytics data source.

To view Google Analytics data (build multi-dimensional grid)

  1. Right-click a Google Analytics Account View in the Object Explorer and select View Details. Then select the Data tab.
  2. In the Data tab, Dimensions and Metrics display in the left pane and a pivot grid displays in the right pane. To display the data, you must build a multi-dimensional grid/view.
  3. First, select a range from the Date Range list. The default is Last Month.

Note: A Google Analytics query must contain a date range. For a list of special date ranges supported by Toad, see Google Analytics Date Ranges.

  4. To build a grid/view, drag Dimensions and Metrics from the left pane to the grid in the right pane.
    1. Drag Dimensions to the grid areas marked Drop Row Fields Here.
    2. Drag Metrics to the grid areas marked Drop Data Items Here.
  5. To view the data, click Refresh in the wizard bar.

    Notes:

    • To display data automatically when adding Dimensions and Metrics, select the Refresh browser immediately option.
    • To remove Dimensions and Metrics from the grid/view, drag them back to the treelist.

To create and save a Query

  1. After building the multi-dimensional view for your selected data, click Save Query in the wizard bar.
  2. In the Create Saved Query dialog, enter a name and a comment (optional), and then click Execute. The saved Query is added to the Queries node in the Object Explorer.

Note: The Query name must be unique. A Query cannot have the same name as an Account View or another Query.

To send to the Query Builder

  • After building the multi-dimensional view, click Send to Query Builder in the Wizard bar to send the query to the Query Builder.

Note: By default, the date column is excluded from the result set in the Query Builder. To add it, select the Visible checkbox in the date column.

To send a saved Query to the Query Builder

  • Right-click a saved Query in the Object Explorer and select Query Builder, or drag the Query to the Query Builder diagram pane.

Note: If you use the Editor to write a SQL statement, each Google Analytics Query must have an alias.

To build a Google Analytics query in the Query Builder

  1. Drag an Account View or saved Query to the Query Builder diagram pane.
  2. If you drag an Account View, a date column is automatically added. To modify the date range, click in the Where field in the date column and specify another date range.

See Google Analytics Date Ranges for more information.

Notes:

  • To view the data of a saved Query, right-click the Query in the Object Explorer and select View Details, then select the Data tab.
  • To view the SQL of a saved Query, right-click the Query and select View Details, then select the Query Info tab.
  • To expand or collapse the Dimensions and Metrics treelist, right-click the treelist pane and select Expand All /Collapse All.
  • To delete a saved Query, right-click the Query and select Operations | Drop Saved Query in the Object Explorer.
  • The state of your multi-dimensional grid/view is preserved if you move away by selecting another Account View or a Query. The state is preserved for the duration of your current Toad session. Click Refresh to display data after returning to the grid/view.
  • Google Analytics saved Queries are similar to views. The definition of each saved Query is stored locally in a hidden table in Local Storage.
