Activity Page (ESX Server)

Use the Activity page to see detailed information about the CPU and memory use of the virtual machine. You can see:

  • How much CPU and memory the virtual machine is using.
  • If ESX is restricting the virtual machine's access to the CPU.
  • If the CPU use of the virtual machine and the ESX overhead are at levels that could affect the performance of the virtual machine.
  • The amount of memory reclaimed by ESX.
  • If the memory use of the virtual machine and the amount of memory being reclaimed by ESX are at levels that could affect the performance of the virtual machine.

To open the Activity Page

  1. Select the Spotlight on Oracle connection in the Spotlight Browser.
  2. Click Virtualization | Activity.

Chart Description

CPU Utilization

CPU Utilization shows how much CPU the virtual machine is using.

Data Description

Limit

Maximum amount of CPU this virtual machine is permitted to use.

This is displayed only when a CPU limit has been configured for the virtual machine. The value of this series changes when the CPU limit of the virtual machine is altered or if the virtual machine is migrated to a host with a different CPU capacity.

Usage

Amount of physical CPU used by the virtual machine on the ESX host. If a CPU limit has been configured, the ESX does not allow CPU usage to exceed the CPU limit.

Competition from other virtual machines may prevent the virtual machine from consuming as much CPU as its limit permits.

Reserved

Minimum amount of CPU this virtual machine is guaranteed to receive.

This is displayed only if a CPU reservation has been configured for the virtual machine. If CPU usage is close to or above CPU reservation, this may indicate that the virtual machine requires more CPU.

CPU Virtualization Overhead

CPU Virtualization Overhead shows if ESX is restricting the virtual machine's access to the CPU.

Data Description

System

Amount of CPU time ESX spent on system processes. This value is typically less than 1%.

Ready

Amount of CPU time this virtual machine wanted access to the CPU but had to wait for it to become available.

A low value (less than 15%) indicates that the virtual machine is getting the CPU it requires. A high ready time indicates that the virtual machine is having to frequently wait to gain access to the physical CPU(s). This may result in the applications running on the virtual machine providing noticeable latency to end users.

Excluded

Percentage of time that the virtual machine is excluded access to the physical CPU(s) due to a configured CPU limit.

CPU Starvation

CPU Starvation shows whether the CPU use of the virtual machine and the ESX overhead are at levels that could affect the performance of the virtual machine.

The values on this chart are shown as percentages and are comprised of CPU used by ESX (Overhead), CPU used by the virtual machine (Usage), and available CPU for the virtual machine (Idle).

Data Description

Overhead

Percentage of CPU access that has been revoked by ESX to be given to other virtual machines or consumed by system overhead.

Idle

Percentage of CPU remaining after CPU overhead and CPU usage have been deducted.

A low idle percentage indicates that the virtual machine may not be getting the CPU time it requires. This can be seen in the chart when the overhead and usage percentages meet.

Usage

Percentage of physical CPU used by the virtual machine on the ESX host.

Note: This value may differ from that shown on the home page and in the Operating System drilldown as the value shown here is the ESX host's view of the virtual machine. CPU utilization shown elsewhere is presented from the perspective of the (virtualized) operating system.

Memory Utilization

Memory Utilization shows how much memory the virtual machine is using.

Data Description

Active Memory

Amount of guest physical memory that ESX estimates is actively being used by the virtual machine.

Configured Size

Configured size of the virtual machine's memory.

Granted

Amount of guest physical memory that is currently backed by machine memory.

Repossessed

Amount of memory reclaimed by ESX to allocate to other virtual machines.

Oracle SGA+PGA

Current combined size of Oracle's SGA and PGA.

Memory Repossessed

Memory Repossessed shows the amount of memory reclaimed by ESX.

Data

Description

Balloon

Amount of memory reclaimed by ESX via ballooning to give to other virtual machines.

Note: For memory to be reclaimed via ballooning, VMware Tools must be installed on the virtual machine.

ESX Swapped

Amount of memory reclaimed by ESX via swapping to give to other virtual machines.

Memory reclaimed via swapping can affect the performance of the virtual machine significantly more than if the memory is reclaimed via ballooning.

Memory Starvation

Memory Starvation shows whether the repossessed memory and active memory are at levels that could affect the performance of the virtual machine.

The values on this chart are shown as percentages and are made up of memory reclaimed by ESX (Repossessed), memory used by the virtual machine (Active Memory), and memory available for the virtual machine (Idle).

Data

Description

Repossessed

Percentage of memory reclaimed by ESX, via ballooning and swapping, to allocate to other virtual machines.

Idle

Percentage of memory remaining after repossessed memory and active memory have been deducted.

A low idle percentage indicates that the performance of the virtual machine may be affected because it is not receiving the memory it needs, or its memory is currently swapped to disk.

Active Memory

Percentage of guest physical memory that ESX estimates is actively being used by the virtual machine.
