SummaryDocument ID is a Site Collection Feature. When this feature is enabled, it enables the menu item
Document ID Settings within Site Settings\Site Collection Administration menu.
By default Assign Document IDs is enabled when the feature is activated. If you do not disable this checkbox on all but one location within your Replication network, then when the item is replicated ver it will be reassigned a new ID, and continue to replicate over with this new ID. This creates an endless loop of replication. If the checkbox is disabled on all but one site collection, then the Document ID is only assigned once and replicated over once that ID has been assigned.
We recommend that one farm or site collection be designated as the master so when new documents are added on the master they are assigned a Document ID and are then replicated out with that ID to all connected farms.
When new documents are added on the other farms, they are assigned a Document ID once they make it to the master, at which point they are replicated out to the other farms with the updated Document ID.
The first time you turn on the Document ID site collection feature for an existing library, all the existing documents in the library will be assigned a Document ID. This change will then be replicated to all connected farms. This replication may cause a lot of activity, depending on the size of your library.
Please note that you must run the “Document ID Assignment” timer job once you have finished set up – so once you have completed enabling Document ID on the farm you have chosen as the master and have disabled Document ID on all your other farms.

- In Central Administration, under Monitoring, select Review Job Defitions.
- Select the “Document ID Assignment job”. Click Run Now.
- Do this for each farm where a change has been made, and run now for each web application that is Replicator enabled.
