The Journal mailbox resides on an Exchange 2010, 2013 or 2016 mailbox server and the Data Loader has stopped processing journal messages. The Jounal Mailbox is overloaded with messages and is not keeping up with the amount of mail flowing into it.
The journal mailbox's Recoverable Items folder (dumpster) has reached its Quota limit preventing the DataLoader from deleting messages. Journal Mailbox is Full.
The following commands need to be run in the Exchange Management shell on the Exchange 2010, Exchange 2013 or Exchange 2016 server that holds the journal mailbox.
Note: this will turn off the retention of deleted items on the journal mailbox.
- Show current dumpster size:
Get-MailboxStatistics <journal Mailbox> | fl TotalDeletedItemSize
- Turn off inheritance of the MailboxDatabase defaults for retention and turn off retention for the Journal mailbox:
Set-Mailbox <journal mailbox> -UseDatabaseRetentionDefault $false -RetainDeletedItemsFor 0
- Purge the dumpster by running the Managed Folder Assistant against the journal mailbox
Start-ManagedFolderAssistant <journal mailbox>
- Verify the dumpster has been purged, the TotalDeletedItemSize should be 0
Get-MailboxStatistics <Journal Mailbox> | fl TotalDeletedItemSize
The Exchange Managed Folder Assistant is responsible for applying retention settings to Exchange mailboxes. Exchange 2010 RTM uses a schedule for this purpose and SP1 and later use the concept of a work cycle. Verify that either a work cycle or schedule has been configured.
