Description
While migrating a document library with versions, receiving the following error:Exception: Versions of this item cannot be deleted because it is on hold or retention policy.Error: Versions of this item cannot be deleted because it is on hold or retention policy. -
Cause
Retention policies enabled at the tenant level affecting all SharePoint sites. -
Resolution
a) Exclude the sites from the Retention policy
or
b) Select the Import Pipeline in the job configuration.
Note: If the Library was initially migrated without Import Pipeline, delete the library and remigrate using Import Pipeline, -
Additional Information
This error occurs when the library is set to create minor versions, but the Import Pipeline is not selected, causing the migration to proceed via CSOM. During a CSOM migration job, uploading a file results in the creation of a temporary minor version 0.1. This version is subsequently deleted to align with the source version. For instance, if the source file has versions 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0, the migration to the target via CSOM will initially create version 0.1. However, when Content Matrix attempts to delete version 0.1, which does not exist in the source, an error is triggered.
