Title

Error when configuring the Coordinator to use Office 365 for the SMTP configuration: "The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated"
Description

After configuring the Coordinator to use Office 365 (smtp.office365.com) for the SMTP server and clicking Test SMTP, the following error occurs:

"The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: 5.7.57 SMTP; Client was not authenticated to send anonymous mail during MAIL FROM [O365ServerName.prod.outlook.com]."
Resolution

Run the following PowerShell command from a Coordinator server to test sending mail to O365:

$msolcred = get-credential

Send-MailMessage –From <FromAddressEnteredOnTheCoordinator> –To user@yourcompany.com –Subject “Test Email” –Body “Test Text” -SmtpServer smtp.office365.com -Credential $msolcred -UseSsl -Port 587

NOTE: Enter the credentials specified in the Coordinator SMTP Configuration under the section 'My Server Requires Authentication'. Also test by using -Port 25 instead of -Port 587.

If you get the same error, the issue is most likely with either the credentials you are using or the From address itself. Try specifying the credentials using an @onmicrosoft.com account, or contact your Exchange Online provider or network team to troubleshoot this SMTP server-side issue.
