Recommended monthly to quarterly maintenance schedule for stable environments.
- Submit a change control for Domino / Mail downtime over a weekend. Plan for 4 hours.
- Set the server in Restricted mode to stop new activities.
- From Domino the console issue "Set config Server_Restricted=4"
- Wait 30 minutes for activity to stop and existing mail to route. *check the mail(*).box files.
- Issue DBCACHE FLUSH, three times, on the Domino Console to ensure all database are closed properly.
- Shutdown Domino to initiate command line offline maintenance procedures.
- Ensure nightly/weekly scheduled backups of Domino has completed and has been verified.
- Run Compact, Updall on key databases. (see examples below)
- Backup the key Domino databases (optional).
- Move the following files to a backup area outside of Domino for housekeeping purposes.
- IBM diagnostic logfiles
- BTlogfiles
- Optional - Clear the various OS temp files.
- Optional - Clear undeleted files on the disk and perform a disk check.
- Restart the Windows server.
- Check that Domino has automatically restarted when the OS is active.
- Disable the server restricted mode.
- From Domino the console issue "Set config Server_Restricted=0"
- Check Domino console for activity.
- Check log files for activity.
- Check the mail(*)box files for activity.
- Verify mail routing from Notes to Exchange/O365 by sending mail to an Outlook user.
- Verify mail routing from Exchange/O365 by sending mail to a Domino user from an Outlook user.
Daily / Weekly maintenance
- Run a program file to compact key databases. See examples below.
- Run a program file to dump statistics to a file. See examples below.
- Check *.box files for unrouted messages. See examples below.
- Check for new NSD's, growing log files and large databases on the Domino server.
Command details
Setting the Domino server to Restricted Mode.
- No new opens are allowed.
- Existing opens still work.
- Allows the Administrator to connect using remote console.
- The restricted server will be able to initiate replication with other servers.
- Other servers will not be able to initiate replication with the restricted server ( NOTE: In some cases, replication is executed even though Sever_restricted is set to 1 or 2. This issue is being tracked as SPR TKAA87ZBBP.)
- The server will be able to route existing mail in its mail.box(es) for transfer or delivery.
- Other servers (without manager access) will not be able to route mail to the restricted server.
Compact, Updall, Fixup examples.
Databases that are always in use and that may need command line maintenance.
- Names.nsf
- Log.nsf
- Other directories defined in the Directory Assistance configuration.
- Mail(*).box
- BTexchange.box
- BTstore.nsf - (If Btzapp is active and configured)
Start an administrative command window. Right-click the Start button and select Command Prompt.
Change directories to the Domino Data Directory for example c:\notesrv\data.
Issue the following commands in sequence.
- C:\notesrv\data\ncompact.exe -c -D -i names.nsf
- C:\notesrv\data\nfixup.exe -F -N names.nsf.
- C:\notesrv\data\nupdall.exe -R names.nsf.
- Check the command window for any errors. If there are any database errors reported do a fixup next.

Check the command window for any errors. Continue with an UPDall.
Repeat for the database listed above.
