Using SQL Express and getting a critical error: "database server could not be contacted"
Description

Running the Configuration Wizard and getting a critical error when trying to specify the SQL Express server where the database will be created:

"database server could not be contacted"
Resolution

The most likely cause is not specifying the instance name in the SQL server name. The default instance name for an SQL Express server is SQLEXPRESS. Try entering the name of the SQL server in the following format:

ServerName\SQLEXPRESS
