When a session is deployed, an error message similar to one of the following appears in the Scripting log and the deployment goes into an error state:
Failed to connect device scsi0:0 for VM ESX1B09-PoolVm-18 on host ESX1B09: Incompatible device backing specified for device '0'.
or
Failed to set SCSI bus type to BusLogic on virtual machine naesx07-PoolVm-32: Incompatible device backing specified for device '2'.
When a Save As or Promote operation fails, it leaves the VM (virtual machine) with references to previous redo files. All subsequent deployments to that VM using a different SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) adapter type than the one used in the failed promotion will be affected by the issue. When the system attempts to deploy a server configuration using a different bus type to that VM, the error occurs.
WORKAROUND 1
An affected VM can be returned to a good working state using the following steps:
1. Locate the affected VM in VMware vSphere Client.
2. Right-click the VM and choose Snapshot | Revert to Snapshot. If that command is dimmed in the menu, skip to step 4.
3. Right-click the VM again and choose Snapshot | Snapshot Manager... In the Snapshot Manager window, select the snapshot and delete it. Close the Snapshot Manager window.
4. Right-click the VM again and choose Edit Settings...
5. In the Edit Settings window, select the first Virtual Disk listed and click the Remove button. Be sure to choose "Remove from virtual machine" rather than "Remove from virtual machine and delete files from disk."
6. Repeat step 5 for any other Virtual Disks. Click OK.
7. In vcsadmin, run the following command, substituting the name of the ESX host running the affected VM:
commandrun [hostname] poll
WORKAROUND 2
Issue can be avoided by only using one SCSI adapter type in server configurations, or segregating server configurations in pools by SCSI adapter type.
STATUS
Issue fixed in Surgient 7.0 Service Pack 2 and Cloud Automation Platform 7.5.
