Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 can be difficult when customizing their start menu from vWorkspace. This is due to the fact that Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 will generate a new start menu at every login and will wipe out metaprofiles previously saved custom start menu configuration, thus resulting back to a default start menu.
One way around this issue, is to perform the following steps:
1. Login as an administrator and customize the start menu for so it is how you'd like the menu to be for all users.
2. Go to the Administrators Profile and grab a copy of these changes. To do this, Open %USERPROFILE%\appdata\local\microsoft\windows and copy the file appsfolder.itemdata-ms
3. Paste this file into the Default Users profile: C:\Users\Default\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\appsfolder.itemdata-ms
4. Mark this file as read only, otherwise the file will be regenerated by windows by default.
5. If you are using vWorkspace User Profiles (Metaprofiles) you can attempt to save the User changes by doing the following: In vWorkspace management console, go to User Profile Management
6i. Click Add,
6ii) Select the category "Windows Appearance"
6iii) Set Profile Tye to "Special Folder" with the Path Appdata\local\microsoft\windows
6iv) Keep the other settings as default if you are unsure what you need
6v) On the Target Assignments page, assign this to the Users/Groups that you wish to save settings for.
6vi) Repeat step 6 for Special Folder: Appdata\Roaming\microsoft\windows
