Pre-requisites for Linux

Before installing the plug-in in a Linux environment, verify that the following prerequisites are met:

The Microsoft ODBC Driver for SQL Server is installed.
The ODBC Driver is required for querying the SQL Server. Installation of the ODBC Driver varies depending on the Linux distribution that you are using. To ensure installation of the appropriate driver for your Linux distribution, see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/connect/odbc/linux-mac/installing-the-microsoft-odbc-driver-for-sql-server.
If you are using SQL Server 2017 on Linux, Quest strongly recommends that you use the Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server. Make sure that you enter the name of the ODBC Driver in the Plug‑in for SQL Server Configure dialog box. For more information see Configuring the plug-in.

A link to the VDI library exists in the default directory for 64-bit libraries.
When you install SQL Server on Linux, the shared VDI Client library, “libsqlvdi.so,” is installed in the /opt/mssql/lib directory by default.
When you install the Plug‑in for SQL Server, a symbolic link to “libsqlvdi.so” is created in the default 64-bit library path. For Ubuntu, the default path is /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu. For Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), the default path is /usr/lib64. After you install the plug-in on Linux, verify that a symbolic link exists from the default 64-bit library path to “libsqlvdi.so.” If the library itself or a symbolic link is not present in the default path, create one.
Example of creating a symbolic link in RHEL or SUSE:
ln -s /opt/mssql/lib/libsqlvdi.so  /usr/lib64/libsqlvdi.so
Example of creating a symbolic link in Ubuntu:
ln -s /opt/mssql/lib/libsqlvdi.so /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libsqlvdi.so

The root user for the operating system (OS) belongs to the Microsoft SQL Server Group (mssql), and the mssql user belongs to the root group.
When you install SQL Server on Linux, the mssql user and group are created for the OS. Only OS users of the mssql group have access for queries and as a VDI Client. The plug-in requires an OS VDI user to access the SQL Server. The OS VDI user and the mssql user must belong to the mssql group, and the mssql OS user has to belong to the OS VDI group.

NOTE: The plug-in requires that you use the root user as the OS VDI user.
Example of adding the root user to the mssql group:
sudo usermod -a -G mssql root
Example of adding the mssql user to the root group:
sudo usermod -a -G root mssql

IMPORTANT: Quest strongly recommends that you install the Microsoft Command Line Utilities for SQL Server — the mssql-tools package.

sudo usermod -a -G mssql root

IMPORTANT: After setting the mssql user and root user group configuration, the system must be rebooted at the earliest for the changes to be effective. Otherwise, backups and restores will fail with ODBC error: Operating system error Operating system error 0x80070005(Access is denied).

Installing or upgrading the plug-in in a standalone environment

You can install or upgrade the plug-in on individual systems, one at a time. You can also deploy the plug-in to multiple machines by creating a deployment task from the WebUI to push the packages to the specified machines. You can use this method for both new and upgrade installations. After the packages are installed on the machines, the new machines are automatically added to the NetVault Server.

Performing a local installation

In the Navigation pane, click Manage Clients.

On the Manage Clients page, select the machine that contains the SQL Server, and click Manage.

On the View Client page, click the Install Plugin button ().

Click Choose Plug-in File, navigate to the location of the “.npk” installation file for the plug-in, for example, on the installation CD or the directory to which the file was downloaded from the website.
Based on the OS in use, the path for this software may vary on the installation CD.

Select the file entitled “sql-x-x-x-x-x.npk,” where xxxxx represents the version number and platform, and click Open.

To begin installation, click Install Plugin.
After the plug-in is successfully installed, a message is displayed.

Performing a remote installation

This process is not plug-in-specific. For more information, see the topic on deploying clients and plug-in packages in the Quest NetVault Administrator’s Guide.

In the Navigation pane, click Guided Configuration.

On the NetVault Configuration Wizard page, click Install Software/Add Clients.

On the Select Software/Add Clients page, select Install NetVault software on remote machines.

In the Package Store list, select the applicable repository.

Click Add NetVault plug-in package.

In the Select packages for deployment dialog, select the file entitled “sql-x-x-x-x-x.npk,” where xxxxx represents the version number and platform, and click OK.
The plug-in file is listed in the deployment table.

Click Next.

On the Machines to Have NetVault Software Installed page, select the applicable machines.

If you are installing an upgrade, select Allow existing NetVault client installations to be upgraded.

Click Install Software/Add Clients.
The status is displayed on the next page.

After the plug-in is successfully installed, click Next to complete the process.
