The general solution is to remove the Rapid Recovery volume filter driver (AAVolFlt) from the volume filters list and disable all Rapid Recovery drivers, as seen in KB Manually Removing Rapid Recovery Filter drivers (4033463) (quest.com). Then manually reinstall all the Rapid Recovery drivers and reboot the system.
NOTE: This procedure requires either the Windows Recovery Console or the AppAssure 5 Recovery Console.
Removing AAVolFlt from the volume filters list and disable the Rapid Recovery drivers:
- Boot the system using a Windows CD, select Repair, and enter the Windows Recovery Console.
- Navigate to \windows\system32\config on the boot drive.
- In the config directory, create a new folder and name it Original.
- Locate the System and Software files (not the .sav files).
- Copy the two files to the Original folder you created in Step 3. This will save the current registry files before any modifications are performed.
- From the command prompt, enter regedit.
- Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
- Click File and select Load Hive.
- Navigate to c:\windows\system32\config.
- Click System and then click Open to load this hive. Then enter the name temp and click OK.
- Disable the AAVolFlt driver to prevent the driver from loading during the system boot by navigating to the following locations and changing the start values as instructed to disable the AppAssure drivers.
- temp\ControlSet001\services\AAFsFlt – Change the Start value to 4
- tempt\ControlSet001\services\AAVDisk – Change the Start value to 4
- temp\ControlSet001\services\AAVolFlt – Change the Start value to 4
- temp\ControlSet001\services\AAVStor – Change the Start value to 4
- Click the temp hive again. Then click the File menu and select Unload Hive.
- Close out all windows and return to the command prompt.
- Reboot the machine normally (not into the CD) or into Safe Mode.
Enabling the drivers after a successful boot
- Open a command prompt on the agent.
- Navigate to the directory
- C:\Program Files\AppRecovery\Agent\Drivers\AppAssure on (Appassure 5).
- C:\Program Files\AppRecovery\Agent\Drivers\ProductDrivers (RapidRecovery 6.x)
- Type Install All and press Enter.
- Verify the output. At the end of the output it should say “Installing drivers was successful.” A failure will return this message (or a similar message): “WdfPostDeviceInstall for AAVolFlt failed…The parameter is incorrect.”
- Verify the drivers by running sc query at a command prompt. For example:
- sc query AAVOLFLT
- sc query AAFSFLT
