With Migration Manager for Exchange (MMEX) there is the ability to use the MAGE agent, which uses EWS, and autodiscover to connect.
MMEX cannot function if native Autodiscover is not working. The EWSEditor utility can be used to test the connectivity, along with the impersonation right, which is also required for the MMEX service account.
EWSEditor is provided by Microsoft as a free utility to test the autodiscover connectivity in the environment is functioning. The latest version of utility can be obtained here: GitHub - dseph/EwsEditor: EWSEditor is a large sample which shows how Exchange Web Services (EWS) calls can be done in code.
The precompiled binary releases may be downloaded from Releases · dseph/EwsEditor · GitHub
Once downloaded, Extract the utility on the Agent Host where the MAGE agent is installed.
If performing a manual switching of a mailbox and there are failures that could be connectivity or permissions related, Extract and test from the MMEX console.
NOTE, all testing should be performed while logged into the particular server as the MMEX Service Account.
1. Open Ewseditor.exe
2. Click ok on the Splash Screen
3. Click FILE > NEW EXCHANGE SERVICE
4. Populate the smtp Address of an account for which the service account should have full access. The format should be as shown above someone@mydomain.com
5. Select the EWS Schema that best suits your environment, or select the blank option if you are not sure of the version.
6. Logged on as the MMEX service account, there should be no need to populate any credentials. Click OK to perform the connectivity test.
If the mailbox opens after clicking YES to the "Do you want to automatically add the mailbox to the tree view" then the test was successful!
If this test fails, then environmental autodiscover configuration, possibly firewalls, etc need to be investigated in the Exchange environment.
Once this connectivity works with EWSeditor, ensure the next steps function to prove impersonation is applied to the service account.
1. Open Ewseditor.exe
2. Click ok on the Splash Screen
3. Click FILE > NEW EXCHANGE SERVICE
4. Having already successfully connected per the test above, populate the email address of the user you previously tested with, and the EWS version, or set to blank.
5. Click the "Check if Using EWS Impersonation" checkbox at the top right of the EWSeditor screen, while logged on to the Agent host as the MMEX service account.. Populate the ID of a mailbox you wish to test accessing with the impersonation right, not the service account.
6. Click OK. If this fails, then the MMEX service account does not have the impersonation right properly assigned. Please follow the steps to configure this permissions per the product documentation available for your version of Migration Manager for Exchange.
If the mailbox opens after clicking YES to the "Do you want to automatically add the mailbox to the tree view" then the test was successful!
