MSDEWriter Failure Error 0x800423F4 (4034432)

You may receive the following error in your log or database files.

Error 0x800423F4 (MSDEWriter failure)

This error has three known causes.

• The SQL Server (MSDE) volume shadow copy writer fails when the SQL Server database recovery model is not set to simple (for information, click here).
• The SQL Server (MSDE) startup service runs under a startup account with the format .\UserName (for more information, click here).
• A Microsoft SQL Server component was unregistered.

To resolve this issue, complete the following steps.

1. Change the database recover model to simple.
2. Open SQL Server Manager.
3. Right click each database and select Properties.
4. Click the Options tab.
5. Under Recovery, set the model to Simple.
6. Change the startup account of the SQL Server service.
   1. Start the Services task within Administrative Tasks.
7. Locate the MSSQLSERVER service in the list.
8. Right click on the service and select Properties.
9. Click the Log On tab.
10. Change Log on as to the local system account.
