Unable to extend AD attribute in schema -

After attempting to extend an AD schema attribute, saving the attribute might take a couple of minutes and will eventually display the following error message:
The communication object, System.ServiceModel.Channels.ServiceChannel, cannot be used for communication because it is in the Faulted state.
