Cause
This error was being caused by the 20MB managment partition that gets presented when presenting iSCSI disk to physical machine. In this case the iSCSI disk was presented to the physical box from a Dell MD series iSCSI array.
Generally the 20MB managment partition is gets masked off once the Dell MPIO driver is installed.

Resolution
Install vendor specifc MPIO driver. Once instaled any managment partition should be masked off and backup should finish successfully.
