Formatter Options

Use these options to modify the way syntax is formatted when formatting code in the Editor.

Click one of the following links to view a video about Basic or Advanced formatting features.

Note: If you want statements automatically formatted when sending them from the Object Explorer to the Editor, select the Automatically format generated SQL check box in Explorer | General. Otherwise, you can manually format statements in the Editor by clicking .

To set formatter options

  1. Select Tools | Options |Editor | Formatter.

  2. Use the Preview tab to preview the current format templates available. Review the following for additional information:

    Formatting style

    Select from pre-formatted templates. An example of the formatting style is displayed in the preview window. Any custom templates you created are also listed. Use the Advanced button to create a custom template.

    To specify custom formatting options for one of the listed templates, select the template and then select the Custom tab.

    Click Advanced to do the following:

    • Specify a location in which to store your formatting templates. You can specify a network location to share templates with colleagues. This ensures that coding standards are consistent for all members of your team.  Each team member must update their folder to point to the shared folder.
    • Create a new template. Use Save As to create a new custom template from an existing template. Specify a new name for your custom template.

      You can then select the new template in the Formatting style list and use the Custom tab to specify custom formatting options for your new template.

  3. Select the Custom tab to specify individual layout, case, and other formatting options for the selected template.

Tips:

  • To navigate to the directory where option settings are stored, click the Application Data Directory link in the About dialog (Help | About).

  • To search for a partial or complete option name or value, use the Search field at the bottom of each Options page. See About Options for more information.
